(Headquarters: Tokyo; President and Representative Director: Takahiko Iwaya; hereinafter “Sanofi”) and TOHO HOLDINGS CO., LTD. (Headquarters: Tokyo; Representative Director, President and CEO: Hiromi Edahiro; hereinafter “TOHO HOLDINGS”), as members of the Study Group for the Establishment of BCP System*1, have been conducting ongoing discussions toward the establishment of a stable pharmaceutical supply framework (BCP system) in the event of a large-scale disaster.

* BCP (Business Continuity Plan) means a plan under which a company predetermines the activities to be carried out in normal times, as well as the methods and means for business continuity in an emergency, so as to enable the continuation or early recovery of its core business operations while minimizing damage to its business assets in the event that the company encounters an emergency such as a natural disaster, major fire, or terrorist attack.

Recently, Sanofi and TOHO PHARMACEUTICAL CO., LTD. (Headquarters: Tokyo; President and Representative Director: Akira Umada; hereinafter “TOHO PHARMACEUTICAL”), a pharmaceutical wholesaling subsidiary of TOHO HOLDINGS, conducted, with the cooperation of Central Japan Railway Company (JR Central) and West Japan Railway Company (JR West), a demonstration test of the emergency transportation of pharmaceuticals to disaster-affected areas using the Shinkansen on the assumption of road traffic restrictions and a shortage of truck drivers in the event of a disaster.

・Purpose of the Demonstration Test
In the event of a large-scale disaster, road disruptions, traffic restrictions, and the breakdown of logistics networks pose significant challenges. However, the Shinkansen is an infrastructure system characterized by strong recovery capabilities and high punctuality. In this demonstration test, the effectiveness of a modal shift leveraging these characteristics of the Shinkansen was examined to assess the extent to which such a modal shift could contribute to the emergency transportation of life-related pharmaceuticals. On this occasion in particular, the test targeted Sanofi’s insulin products, which require stringent temperature control. By using the temperature-controlled transport device SALM*2, developed by TOHO PHARMACEUTICAL, the demonstration was conducted on the assumption of a highly demanding transportation scenario requiring advanced quality control.

・Results of the Demonstration Test
In this demonstration test, no operational delays or temperature deviations occurred throughout the entire process, including transportation by the Shinkansen from Tokyo Station to Hiroshima Station. In addition, temperature control within the SALM functioned properly, and no damage to product packaging or discrepancies in quantity were observed, resulting in the successful completion of smooth transportation. These results confirmed that a logistics operation combining the rapid delivery by and punctuality of the Shinkansen, which is characterized by strong recovery capabilities, with temperature-controlled transport technology can function effectively even in emergencies.
In light of the positive results of this demonstration test, Sanofi and TOHO HOLDINGS will further deepen their partnership to realize a proactive BCP that ensures the uninterrupted supply of pharmaceuticals not only in normal times but also in emergencies. Through collaboration beyond industry boundaries, Sanofi and TOHO HOLDINGS will work together to build a more resilient and sustainable pharmaceutical supply system.

【Overview of the Demonstration】
Date Conducted: January 28, 2026
Cargo: Sanofi insulin products, namely Lantus® XR Injection SoloStar® and Lantus® Injection 100 Units/mL
Equipment Used: Temperature-controlled transport device SALM developed by TOHO PHARMACEUTICAL
Transportation Route: From TOHO PHARMACEUTICAL Logistics Center, TBC DynaBASE (Tokyo) to TBC Hiroshima (Hiroshima Prefecture)
*Shinkansen transportation between Tokyo Station and Hiroshima Station was conducted on the Nozomi service.
Roles of Each Company: Sanofi provided the pharmaceuticals for transport.
TOHO PHARMACEUTICAL conducted logistics operations at the departure and arrival sites.
JR Central and JR West cooperated in transportation via the Shinkansen.
Items Verified: (1) The feasibility of emergency transportation by the Shinkansen as an alternative means in the event of road network disruption during a disaster
(2) Confirmation of the effectiveness of logistics operations using the Shinkansen to maintain a stable supply of pharmaceuticals

*1 The Study Group for the Establishment of the BCP System: An organization comprising pharmaceutical wholesalers, pharmaceutical manufacturers, and logistics companies specializing in the distribution of prescription pharmaceuticals, whose members collaborate to build a resilient logistics network capable of ensuring uninterrupted supply even in emergencies.
*2 Temperature-controlled transport device SALM: A high-performance transport device that enables the stringent temperature control required in the transportation of pharmaceuticals without the use of an external power source.

【About Sanofi】
Sanofi is an R&D-driven, AI-enabled biopharmaceutical company committed to improving people’s lives and delivering strong growth.
